The Names of God
What is a name? It's not just the sound we make to get someone's attention. In the Bible, names tell who the person was... Barnabas - son of encouragement, Daniel - God is my judge.
There are numerous names for God. Each describes an attribute of God.
Psalms 23
v1 The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
v2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
v3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
v4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
v5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
v6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
1)EL - GOD >this is the basic word meaning God; often combined with another word to describe a characteristic of God
2)EL Shaddai (acadia)- God the mountain; found 7 times in the Bible
Shaddai (Hebrew) - Breast; God is all nourishing
Gen. 17:1 (God Almighty) God is establishing his covenant with Abram; this name show God's strength and that he would not be moved.
3)YAHWEH (YHWH); ADONAI - in the Hebrew, it is only used to refer to God; found 6,519 times in the Bible. The Hebrew people took the command of not taking God's name in vain so seriously. This is the name that God tells Moses to call him. When we speak God's name, we should be talking to Him or expecting Him to be listening to us. We should not be afraid of speaking God's name, but we must be serious about it when we do.
4)ELOHIM a.God, b.Judge, c.Creator
1 Jn 2:1 Jesus is our advocate ( in a guilty plea, the advocate speaks to the judge for the accused and asks for a lighter sentence, pleads their case). Daniel lived his life acknowledging that God was his judge. Our purpose is to do what He who created me wants me to do.
5)EL ELYON -God Most High

7) EL ROI - the God who sees Genesis 16:1-14
In verse 13, Hagar calls God , the God who sees. How we like when we are doing right and know that God SEES us. How comforting when we are in pain and God SEES us. How frightening when we are in sin and God SEES us.
8) JEHOVAH ROI - The Lord is My Shepherd Psalms 23
We are sheep who are dumb and terrified of everything. We need a God who will watch over us, guide us, direct us.
What a comfort it is to know that when we call God's name, we know who He is.
