Servanthood
Galatians 6:10
"So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, and especially to those who are of the household of faith."
At the end of our lives, we often try to convey important information, knowledge to others.
During Christ's last few days, he taught the Apostles about love, peace, the Holy Spirit, to be ready for persecution, prayer and instituted the Lord's Supper. He exhibited ways to pray and demonstrated servitude.
SERVANTHOOD IS:
*Rooted In, Starts in Love
John 13:34-35; 15:9-10,17
Without love, we cannot be the servant God requires. Jesus demonstrated love as he washed the disciples feet in John 13. In John 15:9-13,17; "greater love has no man than to lay down his life".
This kind of love is opposite of selfishness.
When we serve, sometimes it's not going to be in a way we are comfortable with. Sometimes, servanthood looks like caring for an elderly person's physical needs or spending time with others - cooking, cleaning.
Our service is to be "for all". We are to do good, live at peace with all - Gal. 6:10; Rom 12:18; Mt 12:50 There is no reward to doing good only to those we love, but in doing good to our enemy. We are to show love to those who are unknown to us, those we may not be comfortable with.
*Regardless of the actions/behavior of the served
John 13:21; Gal. 6:10; Eph. 6: 5-7
Jesus washed Judas' feet despite that He knew Judas would betray him in a few hours. Our Judas is a part of the group that we are told we are to do good to - "ALL MEN". Do good to people as if you are serving Christ personally.
*Regardless of our position in life
John 1:14; 13:3
*Looks and acts like a servant
John 13:4-5
Christ prepared himself to look like a servant - laid aside his coat, took a towel, poured water in the basin. Christ did the work - He washed His disciples dirty feet and dried them.
*Regardless of the need being known
John 13: 6-9
Peter questioned Christ as he washed their feet, Chris told him he would understand later. We don't do it for the recognition. We do it because it needs to be done, because we love.
2 Cor. 9:7 It's not just our money, but our time, skills and love that we must give of cheerfully, when it's needed.
And we must surrender our pride, fear and allow others to be a servant to us in our time of need. This allows them to do what God expects them to do.
