Lay Something Aside – Giving
1 COR 16:1-4
TWO NEEDS FOUND IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
*Gifts are sent to saints in need
*Gifts are collected to support the ministering of God's word
Phil 4:16-17; Luke 10:7; 1 Tim 5:18
Acts 13:1 - multiple men were ministering to the word of God. There are always needs, so we need to be prepared to meet them.
Collection of the Saints
When * On the first day of the week v.2
Who * As I have given orders to the Churches of Galatia v.1
Who * Storing up as he may prosper v.2
How * Whomever you may approve by your letters, I will send to bear your gifts to Jerusalem v.3 >tells us how to cut out the middle man in our giving as a church
Attitudes of Giving
Liberality * 2 Cor 8:1-3 Macedonians, in their poverty, gave the most, beyond their ability.
Urgency * 2 Cor 8:4-5 Philippians of Macedonia - first gave themselves to the Lord so they were urgent to take care of God's people.
Grace *2 Cor 8:6-9 describes giving as grace - v9 is our example of ultimate grace - Christ giving of himself to supply our needs.
Love * 2 Cor 8:24-9:4 not coercing but testing our love; show the proof of your love.
Cheerfulness *2 Cor 9:6-9
Thankfulness towards our God *2 Cor 9:11
The woman at the Temple gave out of her poverty, all that she had
